Mattias Spee

Pianist Mattias Spee is also a composer, improviser and interdisciplinary artist: he is a multi-talent. At an early age, he was taught by Ton Hartsuiker. Under his guidance, the foundations were laid for an interest in contemporary music. Later, that line was continued with pianist Ralph van Raat. After studying at the Amsterdam conservatory, he followed master classes, among others by Håkon Austbø. Mattias Spee was one of the finalists for the Dutch Classical Talent Award 2023, which meant a tour of the major concert halls of the Netherlands, with a programme that included a cycle of his own compositions entitled Insomnia.

As a composer, Mattias likes to be inspired by stories. Initially, he composed mainly for solo piano, but now also for larger ensembles.

Besides his own compositions, Mattias Spee has also premiered a lot of music by other composers. Another great passion is collaborating with artists from other artistic disciplines. Commissioned by the Grachtenfestival, for instance, he created the performance Waar gezongen Wordt met schrijver Shula Tas and cellist/vocalist Chieko Donker Duyvis.
