The weeks I spend with my saxophone quartet, Melisma, are the weeks I laugh the most. In practice, making music together really is just about the best thing there is. As soon as I started my master’s degree at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, our teacher Arno Bornkamp brought us together, and now, 17 years later, we’re still playing in the same line-up. At first, we didn’t speak the same language at all, except for the language of the notes on paper. Now, we only need half a word to understand each other, and it’s still a real treat to play together every time.
